MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Maplewood police responded to a robbery in progress at an ATM machine on Springfield Ave., at about 5 a.m. on Tuesday morning, August 29, according to a release from the Maplewood Police Department.

A 66-year-old man from Maplewood reported that he was withdrawing money at the ATM machine at 1521 Springfield Ave. when "he was confronted by 3 male juveniles," stated the release.

One of the teens attempted to "grab the money that the victim withdrew from the ATM machine and a struggle ensued." The victim was able to fight off the teens and run to safety while calling 911, and he was not injured during the robbery, according to the release from Maplewood police.

Maplewood Patrol Officers were soon after able to locate and stop a teenager who matched the description provided by the victim, and was "positively identified by the victim as being involved in the attempt to rob him," stated the release.

The 15-year-old was transported to police headquarters, and after investigation, charged with Robbery 2C: 15-2 and Conspiracy 2C:5-2, before being transfered to the Essex County Detention Center for Juveniles, according to Maplewood police.

After further investigation, Maplewood detectives "identified the two other male juveniles ages 14 and 16 who were involved in the robbery," stated the release.

Arrests and charges are forthcoming, stated Maplewood police.
