NEWARK, NJ — Benjamin Avrut, 35, of Maplewood, has been arrested and charged with the murder of his mother. 

Maplewood Police Chief Jimmy DeVaul and Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II made the announcement today as part of the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force's investigation of the homicide.

The Prosecutor's Office released a statement that yesterday, “January 4, 2021 at approximately 12:56 p.m. Gwen Avrut, 70, was discovered in her South Orange Avenue home in Maplewood unresponsive suffering from serious injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:39 p.m.”

Neither the method of the crime or whether a weapon was recovered or involved was not disclosed. A woman who said she was an employee at The Top told TAPinto SOMA yesterday that the mother and son lived in separate apartments in the building.
