MAPLEWOOD AND SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race held their 17th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance, with an interfaith service at 2 p.m., followed by a volunteer fair at 3:30 p.m. at Columbia High School, and an evening MLK Luminary Lighting Ceremony at Maplewood Town Hall and in Spiotta Park in South Orange.

In addition, many SOMA residents lit luminaries outside their homes at 5 p.m. on Monday in honor of King's life and legacy, and as organizers explained, "as a sign of peace and our commitment to building the beloved community."

Close to 1,000 luminaries are estimated to have been lit on Monday, said event organizers by email.
