SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — To promote social distancing, South Orange Village marked Memorial Day this year on Facebook Live

Rabbi Jesse Olitsky of Congregation Beth El gave the invocation. Village President Sheena Collum spoke to families who have lost relatives in the Armed Services: "This day brings home the sacrifices and selflessness of those individuals."

During the live stream, members of BSA Troop 60 read the names of South Orange residents who died in the service of their country.

This year's annual Duck Race by the South Mountain YMCA went online as well. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds are earmarked for the three SOMA special improvement district organizations: Springfield Avenue Alliance, Maplewood Village Alliance, and South Orange Village Center Alliance.

The event raised $25,000, even more than last year when the event was held in-person, said Y Senior Executive Director James Goodard.

The duck race winners are: Jessi Gottlieb Empestan, Shiren Vijiasinham, Kate Feigenbaum, Bridget Heindl, John Lester, Lizabeth Hempstead, Katie Falco, Brian Hack, Lynn Lewis, and K. Maynard.
