MILLBURN, NJ - Evan Berney, a Millburn High School (MHS) junior and the founder and president of the Millburn/Short Hills chapter of Sports Equipment Neighborhood Drive (SEND), recently collected another 400 pairs of cleats for SEND. SEND is a nonprofit organization that collects and distributes pre-owned sports equipment to those in need throughout the world.
Berney can be found sporting no. 6 on the fields for the MHS varsity soccer team when the avid soccer fan isn't busy collecting over 1,700 pairs of cleats in two years to help underprivileged children around the world. On a trip to Havana, Cuba Berney was inspired to give back when he saw kids playing with ripped balls and turned his Bar Mitzvah project turned into so much more.
This shipment of footwear is likely to arrive in Columbia, where kids of all ages who love soccer will have the opportunity to own and wear their first pair of real soccer cleats. Berney collects the cleats from a drop box located at Kicks n' Sticks. All used soccer cleats are gladly accepted by SEND and cleat donations have been pouring in from many residents. Entire teams of soccer-loving kids are outfitted by SEND, and they welcome all donations.
