MAPLEWOOD, NJ - The 2014 MSO Packers Pop Warner Football and Cheer Season is underway. They are still looking for players for the 2014 season. The organization is asking for kids 13 and 14 weighing over 170 pounds to join this competitive and fun program.

On-site registration is at Underhill Field at 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Parents should bring birth certificates and 2114 report cards to sign up and kids should bring cleats to the field. Sign up now!  Interested parties should contact Coach Steve at 862-400-7570
Underhill field is the Columbia High School Football Field located near the intersection of Burr Road and Garfield Road. There is alternate "visiting team" parking at the Clinton Elementary School behind the field at 27 Berkshire Road.

"Too many kids give up on little league football because they think they're to heavy to play. That use to be the case with the old Pop Warner rules but not anymore," said Coach Steve Hudson. "In a short time our program has produced some of the best players in the state and one of my former players is the best in the country, running back Kareem Walker from Depaul. In two seasons we won two conference championships and a state championship appearance at Rutgers. However due to a low turnout were unable to have an unlimited team last year. We have restarted our unlimited program this year, and are looking for new players."

A brief history of the team from their website:

The Packers were established in 1968 by Ralph and Pat Kindig, Kel Sherwood, Peter Matusiack, John Mareno, and Bob Bianchi.  During the early and mid sixties, youth football players from Maplewood and South Orange often played football for either the Union Rockets or Bandits.   A bond was signed in 1967 and the Packers were born a year later wearing Green Bay Packer colors but the teams were called the Bobcats, Wildcats, and oldest team Packers.  Players and Cheer would meet at the train station and travel to away games via a bus.  As you could guess, the founders were Green Bay Packer Fans.

The cheer program was created by Eileen Raccioppi and Sandy Facciponte.  For a short time in the 80’s the cheer program had both Cheer and a Dance team.   The MSO packers have over 40 years of experience teaching the fundamentals of football, cheer and the values of good sportsmanship.  The MSO Packer’s legacy has been to prepare our players to compete and exceed as members of their High School Football and Cheer teams.  Numerous Packers have become NCAA student athletes.

*  The Packers are part of Pop Warner, a national football organization.  Our season does not end in October.  MSO Packer teams have competed in regional and post-season tournaments as well as  "Bowl" games annually.

*  The Packers and other member organizations from our conference (Mountain Valley) have seen football and spirit teams go to Disney World in Orlando, Florida to compete for the Pop Warner National Championships.  Packer teams compete against the best.
