MAPLEWOOD, NJ - A new community arts space is opening soon at the corner of Ridgewood Road and Cedar Lane, in the location which was most recently occupied by Lickt Gelato, which closed in October.
Felix Sockwell, an illustrator and artist who has lived in Maplewood for 15 years, knows he wants the space to be a place for artists and freelancers to work and collaborate, as well as to hold events. Beyond that, however, he says he is open to having the space evolve to fit the needs of the community, and is the first to admit that he is still figuring out what the space will be exactly. “I like the idea it’s not easily explained, that it's something you have to keep in touch with to find out what’s going on there," shared Sockwell.
Sockwell sees it as a creative space that can be used in a variety of ways, from classes to performances. "I took the space because I like the vibe and I like the location," said Sockwell, adding "I see it having a little bit of everything from comedy to music."
Other possibilities he envisions include retail, which potentially could be consignment with eclectic items for sale. The space, which has an exposed brick wall, patterned wood floors, and a painted tin ceiling, already houses a number of unique items, from vintage chairs to an antique bird cage.
The space is of now un-named, but Sockwell said he's considering "Campers" and possibly "Mapleweird."
While the space is not officially open yet, Sockwell plans to open soon, "I'm looking forward to letting the community know about it, and to having people create here."
