MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Peter Genovese and the crew from the Munchmobile visited the Park Wood Diner in Maplewood today, the first of 10 diner visits which will determine the winner of the title Best Diner in New Jersey in NJ.com's Best Diner Showdown.

So what's the Munchmobile's verdict on the Park Wood? Full coverage is not published on NJ.com yet, but while at the Park Wood Diner they mentioned that all the desserts were good, and the "lemon meringue pie was outstanding."

"Muncher" Bernie declared the fries "perfect, crispy on the outside, very tender on the inside. Delicious." Some of the dishes sampled included the Grilled Reuben, Eggs Benedict, and the Warm Goat Cheese Salad (also tried on a previous visit). For more about the visit, view their video on Periscope here.

According to regulars of the Park Wood Diner, it's not just the food that makes it such a special place, but the owners and staff as well. The Munchmobile team seems to agree, as Genovese gave a mention on the Munchmobile Instagram account to "Tina our wonderful waitress at the Park Wood Diner."

Park Wood Diner owners Pete and Fifi Kikianis are known for their welcoming manner and their generosity in providing meeting space at the diner, as well as for providing an annual holiday dinner and Easter meal for seniors in the community.

Genovese explained that he and his crew are "on an epic mission to find New Jersey's best diner," a mission which began with hundreds of reader-generated nominations for best diner, which were narrowed down to 40 semi-finalists, and now, just ten remaining finalists.

On Dec. 17, two winners will be announced: one, selected by Genovese, which will receive the title of Best Diner in New Jersey; and one Readers' Choice winner, chosen by online votes received.  Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16., and readers can vote once per day here

As for owner Peter Kikianis, while he acknowledged he would love a win for the Park Wood Diner, he also noted, "we're already full every night."
