UNION, NJ – The plans for developing the old Hawk’s Tavern site on Springfield Road in Vauxhall was approved by the Board of Adjustment Tuesday night.

Located at the corner of Springfield Road and Crestview Avenue, the proposed mixed-use development includes a Spanish-themed restaurant on the ground floor and three apartments on the second. The restaurant plan has seating for 53, with occupancy for another 55 in the lounge area. There are three proposed upstairs apartments: one 1-bedroom and two 2-bedroom apartments.

Over 20 Vauxhall residents asked questions and provided comment about the proposed development.  Parking and traffic were at the top of a list of concerns to area residents.

“People love this community because it’s safe and it’s comfortable,” said one Vauxhall resident.  “We don’t want to impact the growth of Union. We want Union to grow, but we don’t want it to grow at our detriment.”

Concern regarding noise and safety, particularly in regard to the bar located inside the proposed establishment, was also raised by area residents. “I live alone as a single female,” said one resident. “I have some serious concerns about my safety. I’m concerned about the hours and the lack of security that has been discussed before.”

“It’s very heartening to see so many people from the community come out and voice their opinion,” said Board of Adjustment Chairman Richard Galante. “We’re happy to see the community involvement. Union is a town of communities coming together and voicing their opinions and working together.”

“The applicant has gone out of his way to be a community member,” said Galante. “He’s had various meetings with the community to explain and get everyone to understand what he wants to do.”

Galante said the Board could only deal with the variances presented. The Board unanimously voted to grant the variance applicable to the application.  A resolution will be prepared consistent with the Board’s decision.
