SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - There was a "precautionary evacuation"at South Orange Middle School (SOMS) on Wednesday morning, Feb. 8, according to an email that was sent at about 1:15 p.m. from the South Orange Maplewood School District (SOMSD).

SOMS was evacuated at about 10:55 a.m., when staff noticed a gas-like odor, stated the SOMSD email.

"Students and staff were safely evacuated as a precaution and the South Orange Fire Department and PSEG were contacted. The South Orange Fire Chief examined the scene, and PSE&G arrived shortly afterwards and gave clearance to return to the building," according to the email from the SOMSD.

All students and staff returned safely to the building at about 11:50 a.m. SOMS administration adjusted the timing of the first lunch period due to the evacuation, and the remaining class periods were unchanged, with school dismissal at its regular time, stated school officials.

"As always, student safety remains a top priority in our district. We are grateful to the South Orange Fire Department and PSE&G for their quick response and assistance," stated the SOMSD email.
