MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The South Orange Maplewood School District has released its schedule and protocols for reentry to in-person hybrid learning for the remainder of the school year.

“We have adjusted and increased our phased approach based on the latest information from our governor, the CDC, and our local health department,” said Superintendent Dr. Ronald Taylor in a video message. All students who chose not to return will still learn virtually through the end of the school year.

Phase 3 will be one week, April 19-23; this is for students whose families have recently chosen hybrid “to become acquainted with all of our mitigation strategies,” said Taylor in his video.

The week of April 26-30 will be Phase 4; elementary hybrid students will attend shortened school days five days a week. Lunch will not be served, but rather a “grab and go lunch is available to all students upon dismissal,” said the website informational slide. In the upper schools, 8th and 12th graders will join the 6th and 9th graders already in hybrid classes. Fridays will remain virtual.

“If all goes well — and I have to emphasize that,” Taylor said, then Phase 5 will start May 3 and run to the end of the school year, June 24. The South Orange and Maplewood “departments of health and I meet very often with our team members. They're monitoring closely the community spread of COVID-19 and...how the reopening of schools has an impact on our community spread.”

In Phase 5, elementary students will no longer be separated into cohorts, and 7th, 10th and 11th graders will join in hybrid learning.
