MAPLEWOOD, NJ - A motorist from Orange hit a utility pole on Valley St. in Maplewood this morning, Nov. 2, causing damage to his car, a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and to the pole, which fell across the road, blocking traffic.

PSE&G was able to remove the pole from the street, which was then re-opened to traffic.

According to the motorist, he was driving home after having just finished working the night shift when he became aware that his vehicle was headed toward a utility pole on Valley St. He stated that he wasn't sure if he dozed off for a few seconds and that he does not remember any details, and only realized he was about to hit the utility pole when it was too late to avoid impact.

The front end of the vehicle received substantial damage, but the motorist stated he was not injured in the accident.

Maplewood police officer Henry Wasielewski stated that it was fortunate that when the pole came down across the street it did not hit any vehicles or pedestrians.

Wasielewski also commented that the morning's accident was not the first time a vehicle has collided with this pole, which is located on the north side of Valley St., near the intersection with Millburn Ave., and that he recalls several similar accidents.
