SOMA Cares About Schools is holding our second annual BOE Candidates Forum on September 27 at 7:30 p.m. at The Woodland in Maplewood. This forum will be moderated by both South Orange Village President Sheena Collum and Maplewood Mayor Vic DeLuca.
This forum is different than any other debates that you see because candidates will not get the questions ahead of time. All the questions will be submitted by you the public using the attached Google Form here, and then the questions and who will be answering that question, will be placed in a hat and randomly picked by the moderators. There will be a total of 20 different questions asked during the debate with each candidate answering a total of 2 questions.
The only edits made by the organizers would be to remove duplicate questions. So if there are, for example, four questions on the achievement gap only one which does the best to encompass the other three questions will be added.
Last year we had each candidate answer each question but with ten people running and the desire to have multiple topics addressed we have changed the format some. This year the format will be as follows:
- Each candidate will get a 1-minute opening statement.
- There will then be two rounds of questions. The moderators will randomly choose a person and then a question to ask that person. So each person will end up with two questions. Each person will have 1 and a half minutes to answer the questions.
- There will also be a 3-minute closing statement/ rebuttal period for each candidate. During this time you are free to rebut or add something to anything heard another candidate state during the debate and do a closing statement.
We will be giving the audience a chance to submit questions BEFORE the debate starts and the moderators will be checking them to make sure that nothing is a duplicate of a question asked or is a direct attack on a candidate.
