SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — The Community Relations Committee is seeking new members and additional volunteers for the annual Newcomers Day.

Trustee Summer Jones included the announcement in her comments at the meeting of the Village Trustees last night. She also posted about it on Facebook:

"The South Orange Community Relations Committee (CRC) is seeking volunteers to help plan our Newcomers Day that is happening on October 4th. This annual event celebrates all new South Orange residents and businesses to town. However, you don’t have to be new to attend as we provide information around government services, town activities, and volunteer opportunities. If you are interested in helping to plan this event, please email"

The Committee has recently reorganized and is seeking three new members. Jones provided TAPinto SOMA with the following descriptions:

What is the Community Relations Committee?

The Community Relations Committee was established in 1980 to act as the ombudsman for the residents of South Orange. Over the last 40 years, this dynamic group helped to establish many community committees and initiatives including the Gaslight Community newsletter. In the last few years, the CRC has welcomed new South Orange residents with an annual Newcomers Day event which brings together members of the town government and departments, local volunteer committees, and organizations. Additionally, they received nominations and publicly recognized Villagers of the Month. More recently, they hosted several naturalization ceremonies. In June 2020, the CRC made changes to its original resolution to reestablish the group and bring back some past initiatives and create new initiatives for greater community engagement. The CRC is seeking three additional members to round out the group. Meetings are the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. and currently take place via WebEx.

Newcomers Day

Each year, the Community Relations Committee welcomes new residents to town at our Newcomers Day event.  For the past few years, we hosted the event at the South Orange Public Library but this year we plan on moving outside on Sunday, October 4. We are currently searching for volunteers to help plan for this new event that will include volunteer committees and organizations, department heads, local elected officials.  If you like to plan events, love meeting new neighbors, or understand the ins and outs of South Orange, this event is for you.

Those interested can inquire at the email address.
