SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - A man has been banned from riding the jitney after harassing the driver on Wednesday, March 29, stated an update by South Orange Village President Sheena Collum on her Facebook page on Friday, March 31.

According to a report from the South Orange Parking Authority (SOPA), the incident occurred on the Newstead Jitney on Wednesday evening. The driver reported to his supervisor that a passenger directed expletives and a racial slur towards him when exiting the bus, and the supervisor reported the incident to the SOPA Executive Director.

SOPA stated that "an incident report was filed and statements from passengers who were witnesses were solicited," and that "after a review of the facts by SOPA counsel, SOPD and the ED, the passenger was contacted and informed they would no longer be able to use the jitney service."

A record of the incident is on file, stated SOPA.

Collum thanked all the witnesses who came forward on her Facebook update, adding "this type of behavior is completely unacceptable and won't be tolerated."

The SOPA report concluded with, "we take this very seriously both for our driver’s and our passengers well being."
