MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The Governor’s announcement today that teachers are now eligible for COVID-19 vaccination is being applauded by SOMA community members on all sides of the school reopening debate. When teachers first protested school reopening in mid-January one of the South Orange Maplewood Education Association’s central desires was to pause reopening until teachers got vaccinated.

The South Orange Maplewood School District gave the following statement to TAPinto SOMA regarding the announcement:

“As a District, we have advocated to the governor’s office to have vaccinations available to our educators; today, we are pleased to hear of the Governor’s announcement regarding the expansion of Covid-19 vaccines to Pre-K to 12 educators and support staff.”

The parent group SOMA for Safe Return to Schools praised the Governor’s decision as well, “We applaud the effort to get teachers vaccinated. Although vaccinations aren't necessary to open schools, we support the right for teachers to be vaccinated as soon as possible.”

Essex County is currently operating five vaccination sites where teachers can get the Moderna vaccine regardless of whether they live in the county. A teacher who receives their first vaccine dose on March 15 and their second 28 days after would develop their 94 percent immunity by the end of April, according to the CDC.
