SOUTH ORANGE AND MAPLEWOOD, NJ - The South Orange Maplewood School District (SOMSD) sent via email today updated school calendar information.
All SOMSD schools will be closed on Friday, May 27, and Tuesday, May 31, over the Memorial Day weekend. Schools were already closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30.
According to the email from the SOMSD, "every year, the district schedules three emergency school closing days. If the district uses fewer than the allotted three days, then 'give back days' are scheduled near Memorial Day Weekend. This year, the district, so far, was only closed for one day (Monday, January 25)."
The only SOMSD school that was closed for more than one day was South Orange Middle School (SOMS), which was closed twice, on Friday, January 8 and Monday, March 28, both times due to water main breaks.
An email from SOMS Principal Lynn Irby states that the two days will be made-up at the end of the year, with an additional day added for SOMS 6th and 7th grade students on June 22 (it was already a scheduled school day for 8th graders), and a second additional day for all students on June 23.
School will be in session on a 4-hour day schedule for all grades on Monday, June 20, Tuesday, June 21, Wednesday, June 22, and Thursday June 23.
Irby also states in the email that "this is being done instead of any other option, after consultation with the county superintendent, in order to minimize any impact on families over the Memorial Day weekend."
If there is an emergency closing between now and the end of the school year, the calendar will be revised again to reflect those changes.
Looking ahead to next year, the 2016-2017 SOMSD calendar can be viewed here.
