South Orange Summer Nights

The best thing since sliced bread! 

Flood’s Hill in South Orange is the place to be each Wednesday evening all summer long.  Beginning in June, enjoy arts and crafts in a scenic park setting. As the evenings get longer Music takes center stage, complete with free concerts, food trucks, arts activities and games for the kids. In July comes the popular Movies; bring your blanket and your honey and enjoy the show! All in all, its three full months of free arts programming for all to enjoy. Jointly produced by South Orange Department of Recreation and Cultrual Affairs and the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC).

South Orange Summer Nights 2018

Art in the ParkSummer Concerts and Moonlit Movies are Wednesday night programs collectively known as South Orange Summer Nights and this year they are bigger and better than ever! 

Programs are subject to change. In the case of inclement weather, activities will be canceled. South Orange Summer Nights is jointly produced by the South Orange Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs and South Orange Performing Arts Center.

Cameron Park near the Skate House and Duck Pond
• Life Drawing: Learn the basics while drawing a costumed model in an outdoor setting.
Arts Unbound

June 27 6:00PM-8:00PM

• Pegboard Mural: We will work as a team to paint a beautiful geometric board to be used later in the summer. Funky Fun Art

E- Street Shuffle: Hailing from Asbury Park, New Jersey, The E Street Shuffle is a Bruce Springsteen tribute band that built itself from the ground up on the principals of being as musically authentic as humanly possible, while embodying the spirit, power and camaraderie of Springsteen & The E Street Band’s legendary live concerts

Bubble Art: Blow colored bubbles onto white paper to make a unique, colorful and very random painting!

The Benjamins: A unique combination of classic, modern, elegance and edge, The Benjamins are constantly evolving their live show while maintaining their roots and style that has made them a popular main stay in multiple venues and casinos across the country from Vermont to Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio and the Midwest region to Tulsa Oklahoma and Las Vegas.

Pegboard Team Sewing: Our pegboard mural will reappear! Sewing teams will work together to "sew" colorful yarn through the pegboard holes!

• Concerts in the Park, 7:30PM-9:30PM
Men of Horses: From Paul Simon to Maroon 5, Tom Petty to Alex Clare, The Eagles to The Foo Fighters, Men of Horses play the best tunes of yesterday and today without relying on the same old songs you’ve been drinking and dancing to for years. Their live show will keep you dancing all night long, with youthful energy you expect from NJ’s top cover bands, and musicianship that will amaze and inspire you.

August 1

Pendulum Art: Giant pendulums will be used to crate random, unique geometric designs!

• Concerts in the Park, 7:30PM-9:30PM
Stuff Bros.: Each Brother adds his own special something to the musical stew: jazz influences, classical training, original songwriting, urban rocking, country-fried jangles and world beats. By popular demand they're freckling the Northeast together in venues large and small. Whether for the thousands at festive Maplewoodstock, the hundreds at cozy SOPAC and community fundraisers, or the dozens upon dozens at local clubs and house shows, the STUFF BROS live sound keeps people moving and spirits flowing.

Marry the Sea: The soaring vocal power of Marry The Sea delivers timeless messages of love and empowerment from the landscape of our modern world. Their original compositions, pitch-perfect harmonies, and brilliant acoustic interplay of guitars and violin transform listeners, while upright bass and drums further expand their inspiring sound.

Moonlit Movies are held Wednesday evenings starting 8:00PM at Floods Hill in Meadowland Park.

South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race Holds First Neighborhood Summit Meeting in 10 Years

MAPLEWOOD, NJ – This past Tuesday, the South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race hosted a neighborhood summit at The Woodlawn to discuss neighborhood organizing and the town’s changing demographics. This marked the first meeting of its kind in 10 years, said Program Director Audrey Rowe.

“Our goal is to build solid connections,” said Vice Chair Erin Scherzer.
