WESTFIELD, NJ — A woman who police said had barricaded herself in her home with a loaded gun was taken into custody peacefully Thursday night after a standoff with police that shut down the 900 block of Grandview Avenue.

The incident began at about 9 p.m. when police responded to a call to check on the welfare of a resident, Westfield Police Chief David Wayman said at the scene.

“Upon entering the residence, they came into contact with a female resident,” he said. “Upon coming into contact, she barricaded herself in her bedroom and told the officer that she had a gun and that she would shoot him through the door if he tried coming in.”

The officers withdrew from the home, taking the other occupant of the house out with them, he said.

Police secured the perimeter of the residence, activated the police emergency service unit and called in the Westfield Police crisis negotiator.

The police department also issued a Nixle alert just after 10:30 p.m. advising of police activity on the block and asking people to stay away from the area and stay indoors.

The negotiator was heard by neighbors repeating through a loudspeaker, “We're just worried about you and we want to make sure that you’re okay … give us a signal.”

Police entered the home at about midnight.

“After a period of time of attempting to raise the woman, which was unsuccessful, the Westfield Police Department emergency service unit made entry into the residence and came in contact with the woman barricaded in her room,” Wayman said.

He said that police then forced their way into the bedroom and took the woman into custody.

“Located in the room was a loaded .40 caliber handgun,” Wayman said.

The woman has been transported to an area hospital for evaluation, he said.

Erin and James Anderson, who live across the street, were told to turn off their outside lights and stay inside during the standoff. As they watched and heard police from their window, Erin Anderson said she was worried about her neighbor.

"It's somewhat surreal honestly," James Anderson said as events unfolded.
