I am writing to endorse Stephanie Lawson-Muhammad for Board of Education. I got to know her back in 2016, when I first volunteered to help her campaign for a seat on the BOE. Back then, I quickly learned that Stephanie is smart, passionate and dedicated to our district. My daughter and I proudly walked around our neighborhood with her to canvass with her. I had already begun to closely watch the BOE, attending meetings and staying on top of the issues affecting our schools. I was impressed by Stephanie then, and I still am today.
In January 2017, I signed up to take one of the many buses to the Women's March in Washington, but not with any close friends. I saw Stephanie's name on the list for my bus and asked her if we could sit together. She, her daughter, and her close group of friends welcomed me into their crew that day. Spending that amazing day with her solidified in my mind what an incredible person Stephanie is, over and above what I already knew about her from participating in her campaign.
Today, I'm proud to be her friend and supporter. I am amazed at the strength she has shown this year. Whenever I watch Stephanie speak publicly — whether during the recent debates or in BOE meetings — I see a woman with clarity, a true understanding of the issues, and knowledge of what needs to be accomplished. I see her drive to do the right thing for our children. Her drive and experience will only become more important assets for the district and the board as we embark on the long-range facilities plan and our intentional integration work. With that in mind, I urge you to join me in voting for Stephanie on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
