NEW YORK, NY - City Island is a jewel of tranquility surrounded by the hustle and bustle of New York City. The island is accessible by the bridge that connects it to the Bronx. The island is only a mile and a half long, so park the car and enjoy a walk around on the pedestrian friendly streets.

Fall is an especially scenic time to visit the island. On the way into the island, you will begin to see fall foliage as you pass Pelham Bay Park. Once on the island, the fall colors provide a unique esthetic with Long Island Sound in the background. If you are lucky to go on a day with no fog, you will even see a panoramic view of Manhattan.

You are bound to get hungry, and you will not be disappointed with the variety of restaurants that City Island has to offer. The Black Whale is a favorite among tourists and locals with its Sunday brunch. Their crab cake sandwiches are good any day of the week though. Since seafood is such an important part of City Island’s history, it would be a shame not to have seafood at places such as City Island Lobster House or Crab Shanty. If you simply need a liquid break during your walk, head to Alehouse City Island.

Speaking of history, no first timer should visit City Island without visiting the nautical museum. Models of old fashioned boats, maps of the island’s historical development in the fishing industry, and even an old ham radio are on display, as well as seasonal exhibitions throughout the year.

With the similarities of being a quaint residential, close knit community, a popular day getaway from the city, nature, and abundance of seafood, it is no wonder that City Island is often referred to as the Cape Cod of New York City.

The Board of Trustees of the Community Coalition on Race seeks racial equity, integration, and excellence in education for all students in our schools.
