MONTCLAIR, NJ - Caught on camera, a little dog was thrown nearly 10 feet away from his owner's vehicle after an altercation between two drivers on Sunday.
A video (below) surfaced online showing two male drivers fighting in the street on Bloomfield Avenue. One man, driving a white or silver Toyota minivan, the other a red Honda. Things escalated quickly when the driver of the Honda retaliated. After being hit multiple times and nearly thrown to the ground, he can be seen reaching into the van of the other driver, pulling out a small dog and hurling it at least 10ft away onto the sidewalk.
The video was taken by a passerby, who can be heard screaming in the background about the safety of the dog.
The dog can be seen scurrying back to the minivan of its horrified owners as the driver of the red vehicle speeds off.
Lt. David O'Dowd of the Montclair Police Department said that the Montclair Police are aware of and have spoken to both drivers of the vehicles. He added that neither driver was charged in this matter.
He said, "They were both given details about how they can file charges against the other, if they choose to do so." O'Dowd stated that the NJSPCA and Montclair Township Animal Shelter officials are investigating the treatment of the dog and any charges regarding that, will come from state officials, who are investigating the matter.
TAPinto Montclair caught up to Michele Shiber, Animal Cruelty Investigator for Montclair Township, who said, "We are currently investigating the incident."
"We have identified both drivers of the vehicles and have turned the investigation regarding the dog's treatment to the state SPCA." O'Dowd continued, "The NJSPCA and the Montclair Animal Shelter are following up on leads and will be following necessary procedures regarding the treatment of the dog."
Shiber added that it is likely that the driver who threw the dog may receive penalty, but that she cannot comment in the affirmative, since the matter is still under investigation.
