SUMMIT, NJ - Designed and merchandised to feel organic from the first time a customer steps inside, Brooklyn-based modern furniture and home decor retailer West Elm has officially opened its doors in Summit, debuting more than 15,000 square feet of radically renovated space at 343 Springfield Avenue.
The company indicates that the brand's arrival in Summit resulted in the creation of 30 jobs.
At the grand opening event and ribbon cutting, which saw partial-proceeds benefiting the Summit-based Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, a mix of citizens, visitors, and elected officials mingled throughout the store, perusing the wide variety of furniture, lighting, rugs, bedding, textiles, and accessories that fall into mix of West Elm signature design styles: Post-Modern Industrial, Mid-Century Modern, and Decorative Glamor,
As part of West Elm’s LOCAL program, 10 New Jersey-based makers and designers -- which currently includes Summit-based Made With Clay -- will sell their products with the store’s holiday assortment of modern furnishings and decor. A design lab offering West Elm Style and Services supports customers in "their journey to express their personal style at home."
“Springfield Avenue has served as Downtown Summit’s commercial thoroughfare for over a century,” said West Elm president Jim Brett. “We are proud to join this mix of local businesses designed to serve the community, as well as to connect Summit residents to New Jersey-based artists.”
To honor New Jersey’s history of manufacturing, the West Elm Summit store’s 'cash wrap' is made of reclaimed subway tile, originally manufactured in Trenton, and configured in a herringbone pattern, while the loft floor centerpiece is fashioned from salvaged slate roofing tiles sourced throughout the Northeast.
A branch of Williams Sonoma, West Elm was launched in Brooklyn in 2002, and has stores in 85 cities throughout the United States. The company designs 90% of their products in-house and, according to its website, "has steadily increased our selection of organic, handcrafted, sustainably sourced and Fair Trade Certified products."
