SHORT HILLS, NJ – At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Monday, the Millburn Fire Department was alerted to a fire at the Hilton Hotel in Short Hills. The fire started when tar dripped from the roof of the hotel during repairs. The hot tar fell on plywood expansion joints between the concrete sections of the hotel and restaurant and caught fire.
Three Millburn engines and a truck responded to the scene along with fire companies from Springfield, Union, Roseland and Verona. Though the fire was “minor” according to Millburn Fire Captain Stephen Jason, the call went out to other departments.
“It was a large building and there was smoke on upper floors. So we brought more companies in just to check there was no extension. We [did] evacuate the whole building,” commented Captain Jason.
By 7 p.m. the hotel was back in operation except for the dining room. The Hilton Hotel would not comment at the scene but did say that more information would be forthcoming. There was no visible damage from the street.
