MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Top Ice Cream and Fried Chicken had their grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting on Saturday, March 16.
Top, which is located at the corner of Boyden Avenue and Springfield Avenue, serves Japanese fried chicken and Japanese rolled ice cream, which is made in front of the customers while they wait.
The ribbon cutting was attended by the owners of TOP, as well as friends, neighbors, members of the business community and local government officials. Among those attending were Mayor Victor De Luca, Deputy Mayor Nancy Adams, Township Committee members Frank McGehee and Greg Lembrich, and Julie Doran and Deb Yohannan from the Springfield Avenue Partnership.
Carol Buchanan, President of the Hilton Neighborhood Association, and Lorraine Labonne-Storch, Executive Director of the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce, were also there to welcome the new restaurant to Springfield Avenue.
Qin Chen, who owns Top, explained that the ice cream is handmade to order on a cold grill, then a variety of toppings are added.
In addition to ice cream, Top offers Japanese-style crispy chicken and a Taiwanese specialty, octopus balls. Chen commented that everyone from Maplewood Town Hall has been friendly and helpful in the process of opening the restaurant. Chen also thanked her architect, Inda Sechzer, for her help.
Top "is a terrific addition to the culinary landscape of Springfield Avenue," said Mayor DeLuca, adding, "it will be a great destination after a long day at the pool."
Deputy Mayor Adams shared that she thought “the octopus balls are excellent” and Lembrich agreed that Top "is a delicious addition to Maplewood and Springfield Avenue."
"It's great to see something different. Maplewood has cosmopolitan dining options,” said Lembrich.
Top Ice Cream and Fried Chicken is located at 1546 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood.
