Article updated at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11: Two Men Charged in Maplewood Triple Homicide Now in Custody
MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Two men have been charged in the triple homicide in Maplewood on Sunday, Jan. 29, announced Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Maplewood Police Chief Robert Cimino on Friday.
One of the suspects has been apprehended, and one is still at large.
Jimmy P. Mays, age 37, formerly of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, was arrested in Columbia, MD, by detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the Maplewood Police Department, the FBI and the Maryland State Police. Mays is currently in Maryland pending extradition to New Jersey, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's office.
Lavelle T. Davis, 33, of Galloway, NJ, remains at large. He is considered armed and dangerous, stated the Essex County Prosecutor's office.
Both men have been charged with three counts of murder. They have also been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, felony murder, robbery and weapons charges, stated the Essex County Prosecutor's office in a release.
The three murder victims were found dead on Sunday, Jan. 29, when the Maplewood Fire Department responded to an apartment on Van Ness Court in Maplewood to check on the well-being of a resident, after receiving a call from someone who had been unable to reach the occupants of the apartment.
Upon entry, firefighters found three unresponsive adults, two men and a woman. The individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, according to a release from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
Michael Davis, age 45, of Maplewood, Lance Fraser, age 44, of Newark, and Roshana Kelson, age 30, of Paterson, were identified on Jan. 30 as the victims of the triple homicide.
The Essex County Prosecutor's office also stated that "these are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law or enter a guilty plea."
