Update from Maplewood Police at 4:30 p.m. on July 8:

"After further investigation by Detectives this incident was determined to be unfounded. Video surveillance was viewed and helped to determine the incident did not occur."

MAPLEWOOD, NJ - The Maplewood Police Department has issued an advisory about a suspicious incident currently under investigation that occurred yesterday, July 7, at about 12:30 p.m. in Maplewood.

"A 12 year old boy was riding his bicycle home from summer school when a red van driven by an older white male pulled up and attempted to ask him several questions. The boy rode away, returned home unharmed, and reported the incident to his parents several hours later," stated the advisory from Maplewood police.

According to the advisory, the red van was last reported traveling down Sommer Ave. towards Valley St.

Residents are encouraged to notify the Police Department at 973-762-3400 in the event of any suspicious activity.
