WESTFIELD, NJ — In a letter emailed to families of Tamaques Elementary School parents on Sunday, Principal David Duelks identified the 6-year-old who nearly drowned at Westfield Memorial Pool Saturday as a girl who had just finished first grade at the school.
“She is currently at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and under the care of a highly skilled medical team of physicians and nurses,” Duelks wrote.
Duelks wrote that he had spoken to her mother Sunday afternoon.
“At this point in time the family simply requests your continued thoughts and prayers," he wrote.
Westfield Memorial Pool was open Sunday. Mayor Andy Skibitsky said that a complete investigation into the incident was underway. To read his statement, click here.
Editor’s note: The Westfield Public School district has asked that the girl’s name, which was given in this letter, not be released yet to the general public. Out of respect for the family’s wishes, it has been removed from this article.
