Tires: Check tire pressure and tread wear. Improperly inflated tires can cause unsafe handling and braking. Also consider all season snow tires if you're likely to encounter a winter storm on your travels.

Battery: At 0° F, your battery has only half of the cranking power it has at 80 degrees. And all batteries lose strength as they age, so don’t take any chances. Ensure the battery cable connections are tight, and the terminals are free from corrosion. If the battery is more than 3 years old, it's a good idea to have it tested to determine how much life it has left. We will check yours for free and recommend a new battery if it need replacing.

Fluids: Checking these six fluid levels before leaving home for the holidays can save you stress and repair bills. In no particular order, check the:

  • windshield wiper fluid.
  • oil level
  • transmission fluid
  • car's coolant (antifreeze) level
  • brake fluid
  • power-steering fluid

Belts and Hoses: Also take a look at the belts and hoses and look for any signs of cracking. A failure there can leave you stranded without warning.

Wiper Blades: Eventually, the rubber blades of your windshield wipers will begin to degrade. When that happens, it’s time for new ones. Don’t forget the rear wiper blade for wagons, minivans and SUVs. Cleaning your glass and side mirrors before traveling is also wise. Good visibility improves safety.

Lights: With a friend, walk around your vehicle and be sure your headlights, high beams, front parking lamps and front turn signals, taillights and rear turn signals, brake lights (including center-mounted brake light), reverse lights and license plate lights are all functional.

Brake Inspection: Brakes are essential to safety, so it’s wise to be sure they’re in good condition.  With every Preferred Oil Change will we check your brakes for free.

Prepare an emergency kit: Keep a well-stocked emergency kit inside the vehicle. This kit should include: a flashlight, blanket, first aid supplies, common tools and emergency flares, cell phone and charger, jumper cables, extra water and snacks. Be sure to have a spare tire on hand as well as a tire jack.

Call us at 973-762-2525 or come in today to look over your car and we can have you ready for your holiday road trip!

Coalition on Race Responds to Changes in School District Administrators

The Board of Trustees of the Community Coalition on Race seeks racial equity, integration, and excellence in education for all students in our schools.
