To the editor,
I hope with all the restudying of our nation's history in light of the Black Lives Matters movement we are becoming much more enlightened and honest in how we teach our children.
Not only was the enormous wealth of this country accumulated in its first centuries through the labor of millions of Africans slaves, but on land stolen from the indigenous native people who lived here for thousands of years before the Europeans arrived on these shores and committed genocide against nations of peaceful people.
In light of these undisputed facts, I would like to see a discussion of considering changing the name of Columbia High School.
Numerous schools, sports teams and cities are discarding names that are offensive. These changes are important, and we should be part of this process.
I would like to suggest for opening the discussion changing the name of Columbia to SOMA Valley High School.
