CEDAR GROVE, NJ -- The Columbia boys soccer team pulled off an upset in the opening round of the Essex County Tournament.

James Griffis and Charlie Herley scored goals and Andersen Jimenez had an assist for the 17th-seeded Cougars as they defeated 16th-seeded Cedar Grove in a preliminary round game Monday night.

It was only the second loss of the season for Cedar Grove (9-2). Columbia has two victories and two ties this season, but the Cougars now have momentum going into their matchup Thursday afternoon against top-seeded Seton Hall Prep on the road.

Columbia gave the highly touted Pirates all they could handle in a regular-season matchup Sept. 26 before losing to Seton Hall Prep, 1-0.
