SPRINGFIELD, NJ - Monday evening at town hall, the Springfield Township Committee met for a workshop session agenda meeting to discuss topics that would be appearing on the agenda for the township council meeting on Tuesday, June 12. One of the major topics discussed at the meeting was a plan that the committee hopes will begin to resolve the discussion surrounding the former Saks Fifth Avenue property on Millburn Avenue.
In regard to the Saks property, Sam Mardini, the Director of Engineering for Springfield, noted that the size of parking accommodations comes into play. Mardini said during the meeting that any structure with more than 100 parking spaces will automatically trigger a review by Millburn’s planning board. Speaking after the meeting, Mardini said that he has worked to move the plan along.
“I informed the Township Committee of what has happened in the last couple of weeks,” Mardini said. “The planning board requested the township planner do some research on what can be constructed at that site and of course the planning board received that authorization from the Township Committee [so] they can go ahead and proceed with that.”
He also said that the Township Committee was now looking to proceed with a plan of action, and that one option in particular stood out.
“The planner wrote a three-page report where he made certain recommendations, but the main one was that the property be designated an area in need of redevelopment,” Mardini said. “That would create a special ordinance for that property that would allow the property owner to have multiple options as far as density and what he can construct on that site. And then we are going to meet with the property owner soon and if he is in agreement with what the township planner has recommended, which I think he will be, then we will go forward and talk to the Township of Millburn.”
While there is no set timetable for those discussions, it appears that the redevelopment plan will be moving ahead shortly.
