South Orange Police Blotter as of Dec. 4

Adult Arrest - Justin Armstrong, a 27 year old Newark resident was arrested on Friday, Nov. 30, at approximately 9:00 pm for receiving stolen property and active arrest warrants. An SOPD detective observed a subject riding a bicycle that matched the description of a bicycle (blue Schwinn) that had been reported stolen on Nov. 28 and stopped the subject at South Orange Avenue and Elm Court.  During the on scene investigation, a records check revealed two outstanding arrest warrants, one out of East Orange and the other out of South Orange, as well as confirmation from headquarters that the bicycle was in fact the one reported stolen.  Officers arrested Armstrong without further incident and transported him to headquarters where he was processed and charged accordingly.

Theft of Bicycle - A South Orange resident reported that sometime between 8:00 pm, Tuesday, Nov. 27 and 7:00 am, Wednesday, Nov. 28, actor(s) unknown stole his blue Schwinn bicycle, which he had last seen at the side of his residence on South Orange Avenue.

Adult & Juvenile Arrest - Savio Griffin Garcia, an 18 year old West Orange resident and a teenage juvenile male were arrested on Thursday, Nov. 29, at approximately 11:50 pm for burglary to auto. A Tillou Road resident called headquarters and reported that she had just observed three subjects, two of whom she described as black males in dark clothing standing in front of her vehicle, which was parked in her driveway and another subject in dark clothing exit the interior of her vehicle from the front passenger side door. Once observed, all three actors then fled west on Tillou Road across Harding Drive. Officers quickly responded to the area and stopped two subjects, who matched the description given by the witness. After further investigation at the scene, officers determined that the two subjects stopped were two the of three actors involved, including the actor (Garcia) who was observed inside the vehicle. Officers arrested them both and transported them to headquarters where they were processed and charged accordingly.

Adult Arrest - Shoplifting - Calvin Lacosta, a 43 year old Newark resident was arrested on Thursday, Nov. 19, at approximately 6:05 pm for shoplifting. The manager of the 7-11 on Valley Street called headquarters on a shoplifter that had just left the store without paying for items and was headed north on Valley Street towards South Orange Avenue. Officers quickly responded and stopped a subject who matched the description given by the store manager in front of the bus stop at 76 South Orange Avenue. After further investigation at the scene, officers determined that the subject (Lacosta) was the actor involved in the theft. Officers arrested Lacosta without incident and transported him to headquarters where he was processed and charged accordingly.  

Theft - An Our Lady of Sorrows employee reported that sometime between 4:00 pm, Wednesday, Nov. 28 and 9:00 am, Thursday, Nov. 29, actor(s) cut the locks on the Catholic Charity containers located in the parking lot and stole the items that were inside.

Burglary - A South Orange Avenue resident reported that sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 27, actor(s) unknown entered his apartment through the front door, rummaged through a closet and desk drawer and stole $300 in cash. There were no apparent signs of forced entry and the resident was uncertain at the time of the report if anything else was taken. The Detective Bureau was notified and is investigating the incident.

Adult arrests - shoplifting- Furquan Raschke, a 22 year old Irvington resident and Jamal Mitchell, a 30 year old Newark resident were arrested on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at approximately 9:40 pm for shoplifting. Officers responded to a call from an employee at University Liquors that two actors had just fled the store with numerous bottles of alcohol without paying for them.  Officers quickly responded to the area and located two subjects who matched the employee's description of the actors in Grove Park. After further investigation at the scene, officers determined that the two subjects stopped (Raschke and Mitchell) were the actors involved in the shoplifting and arrested them without incident. Officers transported both men to headquarters where they were processed and charged accordingly.  During processing, a records check revealed an outstanding arrest warrant for Mitchell out of East Orange.

Criminal Mischief - A Wilden Place resident and Seton Hall University student reported that at approximately 5 a.m., Monday, Nov. 27, unknown actor(s) threw at least two empty pint bottles at his off-campus residence, which smashed a window of the house, as well as a window of a vehicle that was parked in the driveway.  Several of the residents heard glass breaking and the sound of a car speeding away, though no further description is available.  

Criminal Mischief - A Wilden Place resident and Seton Hall University student reported that sometime between midnight Monday, Nov. 19, unknown actor(s) scratched ("keyed") both sides of his vehicle while it was parked in the driveway of his off-campus residence.

Assist Other Agency - Warrant Arrest - South Orange Police Department officers assisted the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office in arresting Omar Alston, a 39 year old East Orange resident on an outstanding arrest warrant on Monday, Nov. 26, at 1:30 p.m., at a location on Valley Street. Officers arrested Alston without incident and the Prosecutor's Office took custody of Alston.
