South Orange Police Blotter as of Jan. 8

Burglary - The superintendent of an apartment building on Irvington Ave reported that at 6:00 pm, Saturday, Dec. 19, he noticed the side basement door was wide open and an interior door to a storage room had been forcibly pried open. The super stated that several tools were stolen and believes the thefts may have been committed by some independent contractors who have been working in one of the apartments for the past several weeks. The Detective Bureau responded to process the scene and are currently investigating the incident.

Burglary to Auto - A Radel Terr. resident reported that sometime between 3:30 pm, Sunday, Jan. 6, and 9:30 am, Monday, Jan. 7, actor(s) unknown entered his unlocked vehicle and rummaged through the interior, though nothing was reported missing at the time.

Burglary to Auto - A Radel Terr. resident reported that sometime between 5:00 pm, Sunday, Jan. 6 and 7:55 am, Monday, Jan. 7, actor(s) unknown entered his unlocked vehicle, rummaged through the interior and stole an iPhone charger and a pair of black gloves.

Burglary to Auto - A 2nd St. resident reported that sometime between 7:00 and 8:30 pm, Friday, Jan. 4, actor(s) unknown entered her unlocked vehicle, rummaged through the interior and stole her Mass kit for church, worth about $150.00. Detectives responded to process the auto.

Burglary to Auto - A Ward Pl resident reported that sometime between 5:00 am and 12:00 pm, Wednesday Jan. 2, actor(s) unknown entered her unlocked vehicle, rummaged through the interior and stole her purse, which contained cash, credit cards, identification and her checkbook.

Burglary to Autos - Three Meeker St residents reported that sometime between 2:00 pm, Sunday Dec. 30 and 7:00 am, Monday, Dec. 31, actor(s) unknown entered their unlocked vehicles and rummaged through the interiors. Proceeds taken included some cash, a gas discount card and a set of keys.

Burglary to Auto - A Cumberland Rd resident reported that sometime between 4:00 pm, Sunday, Dec. 30 and 12:00 pm, Monday, Dec. 31, actor(s) unknown entered his unlocked vehicle and rummaged through the interior, though nothing appeared to have been taken.

Burglary to Auto - A Meadowbrook Lane resident reported that sometime between 6:00 pm, Sunday, Dec. 30 2:00 pm, and Monday, Dec. 31 actor(s) unknown entered her unlocked vehicle, rummaged through the interior and stole some loose change.

Burglary to Auto - A Beech Spring Rd resident reported that sometime between 3:30 and 8:00 pm, Sunday Dec. 20, actor(s) unknown entered her unlocked vehicle and rummaged through the interior, though nothing appeared to have been stolen.

Burglary to Auto - A Fielding Ct. resident reported on Sunday, Dec. 30. at approximately 9:30 pm, she observed two young, black males wearing dark colored jackets inside her vehicle, which was parked in her driveway. Upon being confronted, the actors fled in an unknown direction.  Officers responded quickly and observed two subjects who matched the description given, run into a backyard on Elm Ct, but could not apprehend the subjects and  a more detailed search proved negative.  It did not appear that anything was taken from the vehicle and detectives responded to process the scene.

Burglary to Autos - A Western Drive North resident reported that sometime between 6:30 pm, Monday, Dec. 24, 8:50 am, and Tuesday, Dec. 25, actor(s) unknown entered two of his unlocked vehicles and rummaged through their interiors, although nothing appeared to be missing at the time of the report.  Both vehicles were parked in his driveway at the time.

Burglary to Auto - A West Montrose Ave resident reported that on Monday, Dec. 24, at approximately 6:56 pm, she observed an unknown actor enter her neighbor's unlocked vehicle, which was parked in the neighbor's driveway. The actor fled when confronted and climbed into the back of a dark colored pickup truck, which then headed south on Page Terrace. The witness described the actor as a male wearing a hooded sweatshirt, but did not see any of the occupants of the pickup.  A search for the vehicle was negative and it did not appear as if anything was taken from the vehicle.

Burglary to Auto - A Thornden Street resident reported that on Sunday, Dec. 23, at approximately 2:49 am, an unknown actor entered her unlocked vehicle and rummaged through the interior, though nothing appeared to have been stolen. The resident captured the incident on home security surveillance video and the actor can be seen entering the vehicle. The actor is described as a male, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and he was carrying a backpack.  Detectives collected the video for evidence.

Burglary to Auto - A Wesley Court resident reported that on Sunday, Dec. 23, at approximately 2:40 am, an unknown actor entered his unlocked vehicle, rummaged through the interior, and stole an unknown amount of loose change. The resident captured the incident on home security surveillance video and the actor can be seen entering the vehicle, but could only be described as a male.  Detectives collected the video for evidence.

Recovered Stolen Auto - On Monday, Dec. 31, at 5:30 pm, officers recovered a stolen auto (2006 BMW), which was parked and unoccupied on Finlay Pl. Officers impounded the vehicle, which was reported stolen out of Irvington on Friday, Dec. 21, reported that the radio had been ripped out of the vehicle.

Warrant Arrest - Jamal Mitchell, a 30 year old Newark resident was arrested on Friday, Jan. 4, at approximately 3:45 am on outstanding arrest warrants. Officers observed a subject (Mitchell) inside the Main Train Station and stopped him to investigate further. During the stop, a record's check revealed the two active arrest warrants (South Orange and East Orange) & officers arrested Mitchell without incident. Officers then transported Mitchell to headquarters where he was processed accordingly.

Adult Arrest Shoplifting - Calvin Lacosta, a 43 year old Orange resident was arrested on Thursday, Jan. 3, at approximately 1:35 pm for shoplifting. Detectives observed a subject enter the Rite-Aid with a rolling luggage bag that appeared to be empty and collapsed in on itself and then appeared to be full to capacity when detectives observed him as he exited the store a few minutes later.  Detectives stopped the subject (Lacosta) and after further investigation at the scene, determined that Lacosta had just shoplifted the items from the store.  Detectives arrested Lacosta without incident and officers transported him to headquarters to be processed accordingly.

Adult Arrest Shoplifting - Keshonda Gineka Bellamy, a 45 year old Newark resident was arrested on Tuesday, Jan. 1, at approximately 6:25 pm for shoplifting. An employee of the Rite Aid on South Orange Ave reported to police that a female shoplifter was in the store and was placing items into a black tote bag. Officers arrived as the shoplifter (Bellamy) was exiting the store, arrested her without incident and transported her to headquarters where she was processed and charged accordingly.  

Shoplifting - An employee of the Wine Emporium on Valley Street, reported that at approximately, 5:25 pm on Tuesday, Jan. 1, a short black male removed a 750 ml bottle of "Stock 84" off the shelf and fled the store with the bottle without paying for it. The actor headed south on Valley Street towards Third Street. Officers responded and searched the area, but could not locate the actor.  

Warrant Arrest  - Ormond Simpkins, a 19 year old Newark resident was arrested on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at approximately 3:35 pm for an outstanding arrest warrant out of South Orange. Detectives, familiar with Simpkins and aware of the warrant observed him walking on Prospect St near Irvington Ave.  Detectives stopped Simpkins and arrested him without further incident.  During a search incident to arrest, detectives found CDS (marijuana) in his possession. Officers transported him to headquarters where he was processed and charged accordingly.

Warrant Arrest - David Hill, a 19 year old South Orange resident, was arrested on Thursday, Dec. 27, at approximately 12:00 pm for an outstanding arrest warrant out of South Orange. Hill, who was aware of the warrant, responded to police headquarters and surrendered himself to detectives, who processed him accordingly.

Package Thefts - On Monday, Dec. 24, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., actor(s) unknown stole packages from several houses, which included addresses on Irving Avenue, Charlton Avenue, Hartford Road and Ralston Avenue. Detectives collected home security surveillance video from a few of the homes and are currently investigating the thefts.

Package Theft - A Ralston Ave resident reported that sometime between 2:30 and 3:30 pm, Friday, Dec. 28, actor(s) unknown stole a package that he left on his porch for UPS to pick up deliver to a customer. The package contained clothing valued at approximately $1,000.00.

Burglary - A So. Kingman Rd resident reported that sometime between 3:00 and 7:00 pm, Friday, Dec. 21, actor(s) unknown entered his garage & stole his green, Cannondale bicycle. It appears the garage was unsecured at the time the incident occurred.
