SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - The South Orange Police Department reports on shoplifting incidents and other crimes that occurred in town over the past week.

Auto theft

On Aug. 11, 2019 during the overnight hours, a Harding Drive resident reports that his Audi Q-7 was stolen from his driveway. The South Orange Detective Bureau is investigating.

Shoplifting arrest

On Aug. 10, 2019 at approximately 8 p.m., Ayanda Mabandla, a 19-year-old Hackensack resident was arrested for shoplifting at The Wine Emporium on Valley Street after he concealed a 750 ml bottle of Bacardi Rum and ran out of the store. The man was located by officers at the intersection of Third and Valley Streets where he was placed under arrest. He was issued a summons and released.

Assault Arrest

On Aug. 9, 2019 at approximately 11:30 p.m., South Orange Police Officers were dispatched to Papillon 25 on Valley Street on a report of a disturbance. After speaking with a victim and witnesses, a 49-year-old Newark resident was arrested and charged with assault. He was transported to the South Orange Police Department where he was processed accordingly and then released on a summons.

Package Theft

On Aug. 8, 2019 at approximately 5 p.m., a Sinclair Terrace resident reported a package theft from his front door. The South Orange Detective Bureau is investigating.

Shoplifting Arrest

On Aug. 6, 2019, a 50-year-old Newark resident was arrested at Stop and Shop on Valley Street for stealing deodorant. He was placed under arrest and transported to the South Orange Police Department and processed accordingly. After the man was released from the South Orange Police Station, he was observed by a South Orange Police Officer entering the Rite Aid on South Orange Avenue. The man exited the Rite Aid several minutes later with a large bulge under the rear portion of his sweatshirt. He was stopped by officers and was found to be in possession of approximately 10 Aveeno Moisturizers. He was placed under arrest and transported to the South Orange Police Department where he was processed accordingly.  

Theft from Vehicle

On Aug. 5, 2019 at approximately 1 a.m., an individual wearing a white t-shirt and jeans was observed opening the driver's side door of a vehicle parked in the driveway of a Glenview Road residence. The actor was scared off and ran to a waiting vehicle (no description of the vehicle) which fled south on Glenview Road. Nothing from the vehicle was taken. The South Orange Police Department advises residents to lock their vehicles and not to leave their key fobs inside.

Auto Theft

On Aug. 5, 2019 during the early morning hours, a Speir Drive resident reported that his 2019 Orange BMW was stolen from his driveway. The South Orange Detective Bureau is investigating.

Warrant Arrest

On Aug. 4, 2019 at approximately 2 a.m., officers were conducting a routine patrol at the South Orange Train Station on Sloan Street and observed a man sleeping on a bench on the second floor platform. Officers were familiar with the man and had prior knowledge that he had a warrant for his arrest out of the Orange Police Department. He was placed under arrest and processed accordingly.
