SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - The South Orange Police Department is reporting on the latest crime in town.
Package Theft Arrests
Two women from Newark and one woman Irvington were arrested for stealing packages from residents this week. Several reports of package thefts from victims front steps were reported on July 8 and 9. Video surveillance from some of the victims; residences also captured the suspects committing the thefts and the vehicle they were utilizing. On July 9, at approximately 3:45 p.m., a resident from Halsey Place notified South Orange Police that he just observed two females stealing packages left by his front door while he was at work. Officers were advised and located the suspect vehicle on Turrell Avenue where they were following a UPS truck. The occupants of the vehicle were all placed under arrest and located inside the vehicle were stolen items from several victims in South Orange. One of the Newark residents was charged with four counts of theft and was turned over to the Essex County Sheriff's for an outstanding warrant, while the second Newark resident and the Irvington resident were also charged with theft and receiving stolen property and released pending their court date.
On July 6, 2019, a homeowner from Turrell Avenue reported sometime during the dates July 5 into July 6 unknown subject entered their residence through an unlocked window. Taken from the residence was a wallet and pack of cigarettes from the dining room table. The victim advised detectives that her credit was used at a McDonalds in Newark on July 6. When detectives responded to McDonalds to view the surveillance video of the suspect using the stolen credit card the suspect was sitting on a wall outside the McDonalds, a 32-year-old resident from East Orange was placed under arrest and transported to South Orange Police Department. The man was charged with several counts of credit card theft and released. The investigation into the burglary is still ongoing.
On July 3, 2019, at approximately 3:45 a.m. a South Orange Patrolman observed a vehicle stopped at the intersection of Valley Street and South Orange Avenue with the green signal. Officers approached the vehicle and observed the driver and passenger sound asleep. After several attempts to try and wake the driver, The officer noticed the vehicle was in "Drive" and the driver had his foot on the break. The officer was able to put the car in "park" and the driver exited his vehicle. The driver was advised he was under arrest for suspicion of DWI and attempted to re-enter his vehicle. He became combative with the officers on scene and was ultimately arrested and transported to South Orange PD. A 30-year-old East Orange man was charged with DWI, aggravated assault on a police officer, and resisting arrest.
On July 3, 2019 at approximately 12:30 a.m., a South Orange patrolman conducted a motor vehicle stop in the area of West South Orange Avenue and Harding Drive. It was determined that the driver of the vehicle, a 48-year-old Newark man was wanted by the Essex County Sheriff's Department. The man was placed under arrest and transported to the South Orange Police Department and turned over to the Essex County Sheriff's Officers.
