The Mommy’s Review - Welcome back, water bottles!

Que silicone collapsible bottles

Well, the kids are firmly back in school, and one of my priorities this year is for everyone to stay dry! No, not in the potty training sense! What I mean is that I’m tired of taking out soggy folders and wet assignments from their backpacks! I can’t tell you how many times my kids came home with wet lunchboxes and school bags this past school year. Their reusable water bottles just were not reliable.

So, I embarked on a quest to find leak-proof water bottles for the 2017-2018 school year, preferably ones that are both BPA free and dishwasher safe. I discovered a bunch of great ones that you can check out if you are also tired of the after-school drip.

Klean Kanteen is one of the most well-known brands of bottles for a reason: this high-quality product comes with a lifetime“Strong As Steel” Guarantee. Their stainless steel Kanteen Kid Classic 12oz bottle features a leak-proof loop cap which can be easily attached to a backpack. With double wall vacuum insulation, the Klean Kanteen keeps drinks hot for up to 12 hours and iced up to 40 hours. Hand washing for the bottle is recommended, but the caps are dishwasher safe. It’s a super sturdy bottle that I’ve really come to like.

Two of the more unusual, but super-functional bottles I found were from a website called The Grommet. This online retailer specializes in unique gifts made by innovative small businesses. The Grommet has a number of water bottles for sale on the site, but two of them are especially cool and kid friendly! These reusable bottles are also collapsible, so they don’t take up a lot of space. The Hydaway is a pocket-sized water bottle that is reusable, watertight, top-rack dishwasher safe, and BPA free. The large size can hold up to 21 ounces of water, but folds down to nearly flat when it’s empty! To be honest, this bottle is so practical that I may not even let my kids use it. I’m going to keep it in my handbag all the time!

Also available at The Grommet is the Que, a collapsible silicone water bottle. The Que is both plastic- and BPA-free, it’s top rack dishwasher safe, and it features an air-seal lock to prevent leakage. With its really cool accordion/spiral design, the Que can shrink to about half its size when it’s empty for easy transport. The Que can even hold hot beverages on the go. I don’t think you can go wrong with either the Hydaway or the Que, but I know for sure that both of these bottles will be coming on family vacations with us in the future.

Another great option is the AUTOSPOUT Straw Gizmo Flip by Contigo. They are dishwasher-safe, BPA-free, and have a spill-proof straw and valve to prevent leaks--even when the spout is open. The bottle fits in most car cup holders, is top-rack dishwasher safe, and is BPA free. They have fun designs for both kids and grown-ups. One thing that I really like about the Gizmo Flip is that its straw does not completely detach from the cap - just enough so that you can clean it, but not so much that it winds up at the bottom of your dishwasher.

Takeya offers a line of water bottles that are made with food-grade, BPA-free, recyclable materials and can be put in the dishwasher, although they recommend hand washing the bottle so the ceramic exterior does not get ruined. Their 18oz Actives bottle is a great size for elementary school backpacks, or even for any family member that’s on-the-go, and has a really tight, easy to close leak-proof twist cap. Plus, with the insulation, drinks should stay cold for up to 24 hours.

Water filtration company Hydroviv has a line of leak-proof bottles that are made out of 100% recycled US metal and are BPA free.  I love that this company hires a lot of moms who are coming back into the workforce. The leak-proof cap on their Hydroviv water bottle definitely works, however I found it a little difficult to put on since you must line it up a certain way with the three locking prongs.

I hope you find something here that will help to keep your kids -- but not their homework-- hydrated and healthy!
