MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Santa Claus arrived in Maplewood yesterday, December 7, with a grand escort – the Maplewood Fire Department. Dozens of folks came to meet with Santa in his house in Dickens Village. The Unaccompanied Minors, the a capella singing group of Columbia High School, entertained the crowd, and a DJ spun seasonal tunes. The chorus from Jefferson Elementary School also sang.

John James, president of Maplewood Village Alliance, welcomed the crowd. Township committee member Dean Dafis explained why Dickens wrote his famous A Christmas Carol. It was a social commentary on his own times, yet has become a classic which has never been out of print since 1843.

Mayor Victor DeLuca read a Christmas story to the assembled kids and counted down to the tree lighting in Ricalton Square.
