SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — Maplewood’s General Store Cooperative cut its red ribbon yesterday, Nov. 29, for opening day on its second annual holiday pop-up shop. About a dozen different vendors are sharing the space at 14 South Orange Avenue through the holiday season.
Co-owners Amy Howlett and Deborah Engel, both Maplewood residents, are encouraging using the hashtag #superradholidayshop to spread the word on social media. Shop hours are Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the store is staying open until 7 p.m. on Thursdays.
Mark Murphy, chair of the South Orange Village Center Alliance, said, “What Deb and Amy add to the holiday season is immeasurable. The store is beautiful. I’d encourage people to come on out.”
Items for sale include hand made art, jewelry, and pottery; MAPSO clothing; kids’ clothing, games, and toys; and seasonal gifts.
The main location of General Store Cooperative is also open on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood, and a second pop up shop is running through December on Millburn Avenue in Millburn.
As Village Trustee Karen Hilton said, “South Orange is a fabulous place to come out and shop local. There are tons of things to buy, especially here at this shop. I'm shopping local, I brought my kids, they're shopping local, too.”
