MAPLEWOOD, NJ — A house fire in the early hours of this morning in took several hours to get under control and resulted in at least two injuries.

The Second Alarm fire on Essex Avenue started at about 3:20 a.m. It “was dispatched as a porch fire with occupant inside,” according to Rob Munson, an administrator of the Facebook group North Jersey Fire News, on a post at about 5:30 a.m. “While in route to the scene dispatch radioed other occupants are inside on the second floor. On arrival Command reported the house is fully involved.”

Maplewood Police Department also responded and removed a woman from the home before MFD had arrived. The fire was extensive, and mutual aid from South Orange, Orange, Montclair and Union was called to the scene. A 62-year-old man was removed from the second floor. The gas intake to the home was secured and PSE&G was on the scene. The Maplewood Building Department, fire investigators and the Essex County Prosecutors office were notified.

The fire was so extensive that it required an “extensive overhaul.” Chris Ariemma, MFD Deputy Chief, explained the term “means that we have to go through the whole house to make sure there is no hidden fire. Usually, we only need to search a room or two. This house required every part to be double-checked.”

By 9 a.m., MFD had deemed the fire under control. Two critical patients, one man with burns and in respiratory arrest and one woman with burns and smoke inhalation, were transferred to UMDNJ University Hospital, Newark.
