MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Although the Maplewood Library is closed by state mandate, the staff has been busy working to meet the current and future needs of their patrons.
Looking ahead, they’re discussing how they can create phased-in service once the state’s emergency order is lifted, and they have many ideas on how they’ll be able to make materials available “contact free.”
Right now though, their virtual offerings have become very popular. Children’s storytimes can be accessed on the Library’s YouTube channel, and live programs for adults will begin in May. The program topics will include:
- Overcoming Anxiety in Children and Teens
- Social Security Strategies
- Book Discussion Groups
- A Movie Discussion Group
Go to the library’s website for more info or to sign up for their monthly enewsletter.
If you’re a Maplewood resident with an active library card, you can easily access materials electronically with the barcode on the back of your card. Each vendor will require you to set up an account and download an app. Databases are available too. All can be found at https://www.maplewoodlibrary.org/virtual-access
Here’s a sample of what you’ll find:
- eBooks and eAudiobooks
- Movies and TV shows
- Language learning
- Virtual storytimes with Ms Amalia
- Databases for adults & teens, including the Maplewood Real Estate files, job search and small business help, and CHS yearbooks.
- Databases for kids, including eBooks, games, and book recommendations as well as access to Scholastic, Worldbook and World Almanac.
“We miss our patrons and look forward to seeing them in the library again, but in a way that is safe," said Library Director Sarah Lester, "For now, our virtual resources are a great way to make sheltering in place easier for students and more entertaining for everyone. We’re expanding our online program offerings and have purchased many new eBook titles in all age categories, and we’ll continue to explore new and unique ways to serve our patrons.”
