MAPLEWOOD, NJ - The South Mountain YMCA celebrated Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, with lots of sun, activities, and healthy snacks, which were provided by the Stop and Shop of South Orange and Trader Joe's of Millburn,
The afternoon of fun included a climbing wall, an obstacle course, laser tag, bounce houses, and slides.
There was also an opportunity for kids to visit to the Burn Unit bus from St. Barnabas Hospital, to learn about wellness programs in the community, as well as YMCA classes, camps and more.
“We believe in the potential of all children and strive to help kids find that within themselves. Healthy Kids Day is a fantastic opportunity to inspire kids and families to keep their minds and bodies active throughout the summer,” South Mountain YMCA Executive Director James Goodger said.
Research shows inactivity causes children to fall behind academically and gain weight twice as fast during the summer as compared to the school year, he noted.
The South Mountain YMCA is already thinking about their next community event, the 20th Annual Duck Race on Memorial Day, May 28, when hundreds will cheer on their ducks as they race down the Rahway River in Maplewood. All Duck Race proceeds go to financial assistance to support members of the community in need.
