MAPLEWOOD/SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — In these ever-changing, challenging times, it’s good to know what local businesses are open, closed, or accessible through a website or online live stream. This list is large, and TAPinto SOMA cannot guarantee it is authoritative: local companies are doing business as they are able, and it is always best to call or check a website when in doubt.

South Orange Village Center Alliance keeps an up to date list, and by following their Facebook page, you can find out more. The Local Business page on the South Orange Covid 19 website says:

Sign Up for SOMA Newsletter
Our newsletter delivers the local news that you can trust.

"Grab a ready-to-go dinner. Live stream your yoga session while your kids take an online guitar lesson. Buy a gift card for a future date. Tag #SOMAopenforbiz when sharing how you are supporting local businesses. Above all, think “local first” when purchasing those essential supplies. It all makes a difference.

Visit our dining, shopping and wellness & services pages to see what businesses are open and how they are operating. Remember to check back frequently as things are changing rapidly."

Some restaurants, like The Fox and Falcon, are closed entirely. “These are trying times,” owner David Massoni said on the popular restaurant’s outgoing phone message, “but we will get through it, and we will be stronger on the other end.”

Others, like La Villa Mexican and Salvadoran Food, which had the misfortune of opening in the month leading up to the coronavirus crisis, had closed and now have reopened for takeout.

Some businesses, like Sadie's and Kitchen A La Mode, are open online and offer delivery.

Budget Blinds of South Orange/Maplewood is offering virtual consultations for anyone looking for solutions to their window covering needs. Call to schedule at 862 437-0692, or check out

Services & Wellness in South Orange:

In Maplewood, many Springfield Avenue restaurants, services, and essential retail outlets are still open; the restaurants are, of course, only delivery and carry out. The Springfield Avenue Partnership keeps an updated list on their website. Categories include food and drink, home and automotive, medical and veterinary, retail, and services.

Their website notes, “We are actively compiling information from Springfield Avenue businesses to keep customers informed of new hours and pick-up or delivery options. Please note this list is a work in progress, and will be continually updated. If you are unsure if a business is open please call ahead.”

In downtown Maplewood, although all non-essential businesses are physically closed, some businesses who are able to are going online or will deliver online orders.

By following the Maplewood Village Alliance’s Facebook page, you can keep up to date on what’s open and closed.

The Maplewood Village Alliance continues to update their list of each downtown Maplewood business and their status:

Maplewood Village merchants are working hard to continue to service their customers in these uncertain times.
Below is a list of most of the merchants (food/drink, retail/services and classes/lessons/health and wellness) and a description of how they are currently operating or if they are closed until further notice. Please support them however you can until we’re on the other side of this pandemic.

Until then, be safe, be strong, be healthy! We can’t wait to see you in person again!
