MAPLEWOOD, NJ — In a case of technology helping social distancing during this winter-into-spring pandemic, the community theater troupe The Strollers will be conducting its audition process for its spring production by video. The spring production is The Trip to Bountiful by Horton Foote. It will be directed by Wanda Maragni.

This follows the cancellation of their March production, Night Watch. The Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts, where the group meets for rehearsals, is closed through March 31.

Auditioners are being asked to record themselves and submit their audition video via email. The cast will be sent scripts and will work on their lines independently during March. Regular rehearsals will start in April — pending the reopening of the center — at the Burgdorff and other locations in the Maplewood area.

The Strollers’ website describes the play this way: “Carrie Watts has accepted the reality of living out her days in a cramped apartment with her unhappy son and daughter-in-law. Her only wish is to return to her beloved hometown of Bountiful, Texas, one last time. Tired of begging and being denied, she resolves to take matters into her own hands. Through feisty determination and the kindness of colorful strangers, she leads us on a bittersweet journey, and reminds us that things are not always as we remember.”

Full directions for auditioning is on The Strollers’ website. Videos should be received by Wednesday, March 18. Performance dates are scheduled as Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9, at 8 p.m.; Sunday, May 10, at 2 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16, at 8 p.m.
