MAPLEWOOD/SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — Incumbent Kamal Zubieta is running for a 1-year unexpired term on the Board of Education; she is the only candidate running for that seat.
Zubieta, who has lived in Maplewood for nearly 17 years, was appointed to the board after the resignation of Javier Farfan. She says she accepted the appointment because she wanted to help to change the culture of the schools.
She said she had great experiences with teachers as her kids went through the SOMSD however, “I felt like there could be more done to help kids feel capable and confident.”
As an incumbent Zubieta feels she is in a good position, having the background knowledge to continue the board’s work while also bringing new ideas.
“I want to see more kids in AP classes and more diverse AP classes,” said Zubieta. She wants to make sure that the curriculum is rigorous and teaching at high levels to all children.
Zubieta says this is the way to fulfill the district's duty to prepare students for their lives after graduation whether they choose college, vo-tech or the armed forces.
