SOUTH ORANGE AND MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Raquel Horn has been appointed the new principal of Marshall Elementary School, which serves students in Kindergarten through second grade, according to an email that was sent to Marshall School families on Thursday from South Orange Maplewood School District (SOMSD) Interim Superintendent Thomas Ficarra.
Horn has been Assistant Principal of Seth Boyden Elementary School since 2009, and also served as Seth Boyden's Acting Principal for several weeks in 2018.
Samuels had been on paid leave and reassigned as "principal on special assignment" for part of the 2017-2018 school year; reasons for this reassignment were not provided by the school district.
Marshall's previous Assistant Principal, Shannon Glander, will be leaving the school to serve as Seth Boyden's Assistant Principal, as well as "leading Seth Boyden as we extend the search for a new principal," stated the email from Ficarra.
The Seth Boyden Elementary School principal position is currently open, as prior principal Damion Frye was not reappointed for the 2018-2019 school year.
The full email about Horn's appointment is below:
Dear Marshall School Community,
I am writing to announce that the Board of Education has appointed Ms. Raquel Horn as the new Principal of Marshall School.
Ms. Horn has served as the Assistant Principal of Seth Boyden since 2009, and served part of this past school year as Acting Principal of Seth Boyden. Before joining SOMSD, Ms. Horn was an elementary teacher and literacy coordinator. Her combination of in-depth classroom and literacy experience, and her 11 years as an elementary administrator, position her perfectly to lead Marshall School.
Ms. Glander has been reassigned to serve as Assistant Principal of Seth Boyden. She will be leading Seth Boyden as we extend the search for a new Principal, with my thanks for her ongoing dedication and leadership.
Ms. Horn and Ms. Glander have worked closely together as assistant principals for the past three years, and collaborated during their time as Acting Principals this past year. They have already met to begin a smooth transition between the two schools, and will be consulting with each other in preparation for welcoming students and staff in September.
Please join me in welcoming Ms. Horn to Marshall.
Dr. Thomas Ficarra
