MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Three SOMA citizens have announced intentions to run for the four spots available on the South Orange Maplewood Board of Education; three are three-year terms, the last is a one-year term to fill the remaining year of a term after Javier Farfan resigned in January. Kamal Zubieta was appointed to his seat, but only for one year, leaving the last year of the term open.
Maplewood resident Susan Lewis Bergin and South Orange resident Courtney Winkfield are running as a team. Bergin is a lawyer and volunteer with the South Orange Maplewood School District, and Winkfield has a master’s degree in education and works for the NYC Department of Education’s Office of Equity & Access.
Elissa Malespina of South Orange is running solo. She is currently the librarian at Verona High School and taught in the South Orange-Maplewood School District for nine years.
Current board member and former board president Elizabeth Baker, who is in the last year of her second term, announced that she is not running for a third term.
