On Tuesday, November 5 I urge you to vote for Carey Smith for the Board of Education.  This choice is especially important as the district begins a massive facilities upgrade and district wide integration plan.  As a friend of his for 30+ years and a local educator (though not in SOMA), I believe that Carey possess unique qualities that make him the right man for this position at this time.

He is a father of two children in the district and an alumnus of the district himself therefore he has a vested interest in making the future of SOMA schools bright.  He has served in various roles on the South Mountain Elementary PTA as well as the South Orange Middle School HSA in order to help ensure that this happens.

Carey believes that all children, regardless of which school they attend, should receive a high quality education in a safe environment.  While at Lehigh University, he was a leader in establishing dialogue about the race relations on campus because he felt that there was a lack of equity.  He has served as an EMT for over 20 years showing he is a caring individual who does not pay attention to aspects of a person such as race or ethnicity but rather treats everyone as an equal individual deserving of the same attention and care.   He understands the needs of teachers and believes that teachers want the professional development and support to allow them to provide the safe, high quality education all children deserve.  As a father himself, he understands that education is more than learning facts in a book, but also includes children’s social and psychological needs.

Carey is a business man by profession therefore is comfortable overseeing the major projects the district is about to begin and understands the need for communication and transparency throughout this project and others in the future.  According to Carey, families should be updated regularly regarding progress made and monies spent.  In addition, families and community organizations should be encouraged to become involved in the schools.

For these reasons, I endorse Carey Smith for SOMA School Board and urge you to vote for him on the 5th.

Thank you,
