MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Veterans Day was observed and celebrated in the Maplewood Municipal Building on Saturday, November 11.

Music was provided for the observance by the Maplewood Concert Band under the direction of Steve Kimmons, Former Commander of the Eighth Air Force Band.

After the first musical number was played, Maplewood Mayor Victor DeLuca called the ceremony to order, and called for the Presentation of Colors, which was done by the Maplewood VFW Post 10120 Honor Guard. After the colors were posted the National Anthem was sung by Kari Capone, a Maplewood resident. She was followed by the Invocation delivered by Rev. Durwin F. Johnson, Associate Minister, first Baptist Church of Vauxhall, who also later delivered the closing Benediction. He is a Member of the Maplewood Clergy Alliance, and a resident of Maplewood.

DeLuca then led all in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Kari Capone who led in the singing of “My Country Tis of Thee”.

DeLuca gave words of welcome, introduced Deputy Mayor Nancy Adams, and Maplewood Township Committee members India Larrier, Frank McGehee, and Greg Lembrich. DeLuca spoke of both the veterans and active servicemen and women.

Commander Frank Warzcha made a few remarks regarding service and honor to all veterans and people currently on active duty. Following a musical salute to all the armed forces, DeLuca carried a microphone around the room when many spoke of their personal service, or of the service of someone else who they were representing, which ranged from those who served in the first World War to those currently serving on active duty.

Lembrich commented that Saturday's gathering was a larger assembly of people than in recent years, probably due to the ceremony being on the weekend, so that people were not at work and could attend. This year, there were at least two people present for the ceremony from out of state: one from Pennsylvania, and one from Connecticut.

All were invited to partake in lunch and desert in the lobby of the Maplewood Municipal building following the ceremony.
