MAPLEWOOD, NJ - The Maplewood Women's Club celebrated their 101st birthday with a luncheon, entertainment, and two large donations to area organizations at The Woodland at 60 Woodland Ave, which was formerly owned by the club.

Joann Aponte, President of the Maplewood Women's Club, spoke about the many charitable efforts the club performs throughout the year. She then asked Ellen Davenport, the Chair of Dickens Village and a former Mayor of Maplewood, to join her and presented Davenport with a $10,000 check for for the maintenance of the Dickens Village Houses and the Women's Club’s "little house" in particular. Aponte also gifted Davenport with an antique cup and saucer for their "little house."

Aponte then asked Susan Newberry, President of the Durand-Hedden House & Garden, and Marilyn Schnaars, a Trustee and Docent of Durand-Hedden, to join her and presented them with a check for $50,000 for maintenance and repairs of the property.

"This is wonderful, especially since we need to do a lot of repair to the roof, and bring it up to current code," said Newberry.

Following the two check presentations, Maplewood Mayor Vic DeLuca spoke briefly, extolling the work of the Women's Club and thanking them for all their charitable endeavors. DeLuca said another plaque will be installed in The Woodland recognizing the organization and its work and history.

Aponte told the audience to “stay tuned," and that the next big announcement will be about the Maplewood Library, which is planning a major renovation.

The Women's Club also celebrated with birthday cake to commemorate the club's 101st year.

The Women's Club of Maplewood's support and contributions to Maplewood and surrounding areas includes children with special needs, children's hospitals, victims of domestic violence, mother and child homeless shelters, The Columbia High School Scholarship Fund, The Children's Room of The Maplewood Memorial Library, The Maplewood Library Ideas Festival, The Durand-Hedden House & Garden Association, Dickens Village, and the World War II plane, Spitfire.
